According to research studies, spending more time in the sun improves fertility in both men and women. In some cases, increase sunlight exposure can boost a woman’s fertility by as much as a third and women may be 35% more likely to have successful IVF treatment. As for men, sperm activity is twice as much in the summer months (July and August) as compared to January.

Sunlight improves the level of melatonin, a hormone which helps in the regulation of a woman’s reproductive cycle. Also, vitamin D which is a key factor in improving reproductive health, is mainly obtained from sunlight. The amount of vitamin D obtained from food sources such as eggs, milk, fish, and cereal is very limited and insufficient to meet your body’s requirements.

Vitamin D helps optimize the levels of the female sex hormones progesterone and estrogen to improve ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovary). The levels of the male sex hormone testosterone are also optimized which helps to produce sperm and boosts libido.

If you are considering IVF treatments, sunlight has been shown to have a positive effect on number of eggs, IVF implantation rates, and successful treatment outcomes.

Taking long walks, spending time at the beach, gardening, or any outdoor activity you enjoy are all great ways to improve your chances of getting pregnant. Just make sure if you are spending extended periods of time in the sun that you protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun by applying adequate sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wear long sleeved clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, and a pair of sun glasses.
