Navigating the infertility journey is undeniably emotional. Once the idea of being able to conceive a child comes into question, it is normal to feel a wide range of emotions. Unfortunately, the negative emotions of sadness, anger, and frustration tend to lead the pack. Finding ways to cope emotionally is all a couple can hope to do when faced with such an uncertain situation. Infertility is a challenging journey, but learning to utilize the available resources and support is key to not letting it consume one's day-to-day life.
Infertility Coping Strategies:
- Accept Emotions - worry, distress, and other negative emotions are inevitable and it is important for patients to allow themselves the space to feel and accept their place within the journey. It is also important to know when it is time to let go of defeatist, toxic emotions that are not serving overall well-being and health.
- Maintain Physical Health - it is important to keep the body's stress level down as much as possible. Eating well, exercising regularly, and practicing daily self-care is imperative to maintaining physical health.
- Seek Support - whether it be with friends, family, or more formal support groups, it is critical to share personal infertility struggles with others. Sharing with others gives numerous emotions a place to be processed and validated.
- Stay Informed - uncertainty breeds fear. Factual information can help to ease the fear of the unknown. It can also give the patient more confidence as they are making extensive medical decisions and weighing fertility options. It is also important to educate others about infertility so they can offer meaningful and informed support.
Infertility can be one of the most distressing experiences for couples. It is paramount for the patient to allow themselves and their partner to grieve and process their emotions differently. Keeping in mind that infertility is no one's fault is also crucial to moving forward no matter the outcome of the infertility journey.
