In May of 2014 at the age of 31, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Triple Negative breast cancer. We had just begun to start thinking about having children, and just like that, our plans for everything were put on hold.
One of the first questions I asked my oncology team was how treatment would affect my fertility. They weren’t able to answer with certainty, and referred me to Dr. Pinto to discuss freezing my eggs. Because the cancer was hormone negative, we went ahead with egg retrieval, and the day after the procedure, I started chemo.
Fast forward 3 years later: we have a beautiful 1 year old baby boy. We are so thankful to Dr. Pinto and his team for preserving my eggs prior to chemo, and for a successful venture in IVF after being declared cancer free. Knowing the eggs were tucked away, safe from the poison of chemotherapy was a huge part of helping me see the light at the end of the treatment tunnel.
We’re forever grateful for the gift of our family.
